How to be a Servant Leader is a post from: Complete Self Improvement

Being a leader is a very big responsibility. As one, you should expect to have a lot on your plate, and you should be able to handle all of these things, on your own. You will be the person in charge and the person that everyone will look up to. You will be the person that everyone turns to, for answers, and while you are not exactly expected to have answers for anything, you should at least be equipped to handle all kinds of situations. Your plate will be full and you have to accept this as your reality because a good leader is a leader of the people.

The wrong impression of leadership

Some people think that leadership entails power and while that may be true, the powers of a leader is not the only thing that defines him. A leader is not put in charge of things, just so he can abuse whatever control he has, for his own gain. A leader is not given the power, just so he can manipulate and take advantage of people. A good leader aspire the best things for his team and all his subordinates because he understands that he is in charge of all their welfare.

The servant leader

As a servant leader, you should take note of the following qualities:

  • A good listener: As a leader you should not be an I, ME, MINE person, however tempting it is to put all the focus on you because you have to understand that there are other people and there are emotions and opinions that have to be considered. In the middle of pressing issues, you should know how to pause for a while, and listen, so that you can have an unbiased opinion of the situation.
  • Ready to take blame: A good leader understands that he is in charge, therefore, even the mistakes of his people are his own and he is not afraid to take the blame and to stand up for them. A leader does not wash his hands and leaves his people behind. While it is his responsibility to right wrongs and point faults, he understands that he needs to protect and take one for the team, when necessary.
  • A peacemaker: In the middle of confusion and arguments, it can be quite difficult to know which side to favor and a leader should never take sides. As one, he should get to the bottom of things and should find effective means to bring peace. Peace and harmony promotes productivity and if you are able to keep the peace in the workplace, your unit will function better.
  • A good example: Do what you preach. This is a common fault in most leaders. They are quick to dictate certain rules to people and they order people around, but when it comes to themselves, to follow no rules and no restrictions. As a leader, you should aspire to be a good example to your people and you should inspire them to be like you. What impression will you leave to them if you are all talk and no action?

What kind of leader are you?

There are bad leaders but there are good ones. What kind of leader are you? Are you the type whose name will resonate loudly because of the good that you have done or will you leave behind bad trails?
